'I'd love to produce a Kannada film'

He has been able to stick to the silver screen for decades, even as many of his contemporaries are making second comebacks.

Bollywood star Anil Kapoor has always managed to be a trend-setter — whether through his style quotient or even his debut in Hollywood, after which many other stars followed suit. Metrolife caught up with the superstar, who was in the City recently after purchasing a villa near the International Airport. “Doors are opening and it won’t be long before Bollywood and Hollywood come together. It will be a normal thing.

I am optimistic about it,” he says, reacting to Indian stars who are being seen in Hollywood movies.

Ask him if buying property here means that he will star in South Indian films and he says, “At this point, I would love to produce a Kannada film.” He recalls that one of his first few films of his career, Pallavi Anu Pallavi, was in Kannada. “Right now, I am focussing on my Hindi film career,” he adds.

The actor, who is currently working on the Indian adaptation of American drama series ‘24’, where he plays the lead actor as well, says that this project is a good mix of the East and West. “It was a very good learning experience. While there is much culture, value system and trust here, there is so much discipline and professionalism in the West. Everything happens on time and nothing is left to the last minute,” he explains.

Undoubtedly one of the fittest actors of his generation, Anil says that his mantra is to be positive. “If one doesn’t have a positive attitude, then there is no use exercising. The state of mind is really important because it affects the body,” he reflects.

His daughter Sonam Kapoor had recently said that she is interested in direction. “Sonam started off as an assistant director. I’ll be proud of her if she can do it. Some fantastic films have been directed by women. The time has come for them to take over,” he says. Talking about the latest offering from his daughter, Raanjahanaa, he adds, “I’ve heard the music. It’s absolutely wonderful. Everyone is looking forward to the film, it’s very raw and earthy.” He adds, “Sonam has worked with the best directors. She is careful and choosy about roles and directors.”

Anil has always made style statements in terms of dressing. “It’s important to feel comfortable. If you aren’t, then it shows on your face. The colour, fabric and fitting are all secondary. It’s how you carry what you wear. When it comes to style, you either have it or you don’t,” he signs off.
