Arsenic water: 100 borewells to be sealed

The State government has ordered closure and sealing of around 100 borewells in 63 villages in the districts of Raichur and Yadgir as the arsenic level in groundwater was found to be above permissable limits.

Addressing a press conference in Bangalore on Friday, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H K Patil said the district administration has been directed to drill borewells at alternative locations in the villages. “If the water in the new borewells is also contaminated with arsenic, water will be provided to the villagers in tankers. We are also planning to provide them piped water supply”, the minister said.

Media reports

Patil had visited the villages recently following media reports on the health hazard being faced by the villagers due to arsenic contamination.

The minister said arsenic testing units at a cost of Rs 1 crore will be set up in the districts to monitor groundwater on a regular basis.
