Paid parking system may make a comeback

Paid parking system may make a comeback in the City if the State government gives its nod to the proposal by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

According to Mayor Venkatesh Murthy, the Palike had proposed the system two years ago in an effort to mobilise additional resources, but the government had not approved it.

“We are planning to revive it, as it will not only help reduce congestion but will also help us raise up to Rs 200 crore per annum,” Murthy said.

When contacted, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Security), M A Saleem said his department had requested the BBMP to introduce pay and parking system some years ago to avoid congestion and make optimum utilisation of parking space.

He said that the Palike will have to take a decision in this regard as the issue falls under its limits.

“The police suggested different fee structures for different areas. We had recommended higher parking fee in all areas that are covered by Central Business Districts (CBD), while the fees for such lots in residential areas could be nominal,” he added.

Bangalore district In-charge Minister Ramalinga Reddy said a decision will have to be taken after discussions with various departments like Finance and BBMP.
