Girish, Raghunandan, Ananya strike gold

Young chess players from Karnataka made their mark at the Asian Youth Championships in Iran on Wednesday, with three of them -- Girish Koushik, Raghunandan K S and Ananya Suresh -- claiming gold medals.

The Championship was conducted in Standard, Rapid and Blitz formats. 

Mysorean Girish, who has been a constient performer on the Asian stage, scored 7.5 points out of maximum possible nine points in Standard format, winning the gold medal in the U-16 open category. He also clinched a silver in the rapid format, scoring six points out of seven.

Bangalore boy Raghunandan scored 7.5 points out of nine to emerge champion in the standard format for under-12 (open).

Raghunandan has been a top performer over the last three years, winning the State under-9 title in 2010, the Asian school under-12 title in 2012,  and the State under-11 titles in 2011 and 2012.

Ananya, from Kodagu, claimed the gold in the under-14 girls Rapid section, with a total of 6.5 points out of seven. Ananya, a silver medallist in the under-13 nationals last year, also picked up a bronze in the Standard segment.
