A spurned lover allegedly committed suicide by hanging in Ashokapuram police limits on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as Chaitra Saheb (27) daughter of milk vendor Padmaraj and resident of Jayanagar. Her mother had passed away.

Chaitra reportedly took the extreme step after all her efforts to enter into wedlock with the boy she was courting, went awry. Chaitra, who was working as a reporting analyst at a software company in the city, was in love with her colleague Prem Maxen, who belonged to a different religion. Prem had joined a different firm.

A resident of N R Mohalla, Prem was going around with Chaitra, who was older to him by four years. However, the two split up in the year 2011, when the relationship went sour after a year long affair. According to the police, Prem severed the relationship after Chaitra insisted on getting married.

Demand for money

Chaitra had also become pregnant, and Prem was aware of it. Later, when the matter came to the notice of the elders, a local leader in Ashokapuram tried to broker truce by arranging meeting between parents of both Chaitra and Prem.

Prem demanded Rs 10 lakh to accept Chaitra’s hands in marriage. Prem had reasoned that he was in dire need of money for his sister’s marriage.

Though Chaitra’s father had agreed for the settlement, Prem seemed distant, buying time to decide on the marriage. Shattered, Chaitra had no other option but to wait for Prem.

Death note

Prem who turned flirtatious later, reportedly began to court another girl. Moreover, he tried to severe his ties with Chaitra completely by making his newfound lover call Chaitra to warn her to keep away from him. Depressed, Chaitra aborted her pregnancy and also decided to end her life, according to a death note she had written on July 31, 2012. But she didn’t go through with her plans.

However, after two months, on September 1, 2012 she lodged a complaint with Ashokapuram police against Prem and his mother Martha Vijaykumari. Prem was the prime accused in the case booked under rape (376) and cheating (498) charges of IPC. Prem and his mother who eluded police, had however succeeded in obtaining anticipatory bail.

Chaitra who was living a troubled life was on leave for two days. She was found hanging on Wednesday night around 9 pm, after her father returned home. In her suicide note, she has expressed her inability to convince her older sister living at Hyderabad to look after their aged father.

Now, Prem and his mother have been booked under 306 of IPC (provocation) and SC/ ST Prevention of Atrocity Act. The police are yet to arrest them.
