Despite being considered a progressive, IT-savvy state, Andhra Pradesh has got an undesirable record when it comes to women safety.

Statistics released by National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) revealed that AP is the second most unsafe state for women in the country, behind West Bengal. Over 11 per cent of all crimes against women in India happen in the state. The NCRB revealed that 28,171 cases of crimes against women were registered in the state in 2012. Only West Bengal had more, with 30,942 cases.

Hyderabad recorded 1,899 cases of crimes against women, just behind Delhi, Kolkata and Bangalore. With 13,389 cases of cruelty caused to women by their husbands and relatives, the state was again behind West Bengal for such offences.

While the state registered lesser rape incidents, AP was behind Madhya Pradesh when it came to assault on women.
