A newly married woman was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her husband's house in Maralakunte, Bagalur on Saturday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sneha, 23, a native of Anekal. She had married Prakash, 27, just two months ago.

The incident was reported to police by Sneha’s mother-in-law, Premamma, who claimed that she had found Sneha hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. In her official statement, Premamma claimed to have left the house during the day on an errand, leaving Sneha with her daughter Padma and her son-in-law, Sudheendra.

When she returned later at night with her husband Ramachandra, she said Sneha had locked herself in her room. When Sneha did not answer their calls to open the door, the family went outside. They looked through a window into the room and found her hanging.

The family then claimed to have broken open the door and retrieved the body. Prakash came home later that night, after Bagalur police were in the house.

Harassment alleged Nanjundaswamy, Sneha's father, has alleged that his daughter was murdered over dowry.

He said that Prakash was given a bike and some gold jewellery as part of the dowry at the time of wedding. At the time, Prakash had claimed to be a supervisor at a garments factory. He was, however, not employed anywhere and did not have any money, Nanjundaswamy said.

According to Nanjundaswamy, Prakash and his family demanded more dowry shortly after the wedding. He said that the family started to harass Sneha when he failed to give them the money.

“Worse, Prakash was infatuated with another girl before the wedding and was forced into a marriage with Sneha by his family,” he said and alleged that Prakash killed Sneha so that he could remarry.

Nanjundaswamy has now lodged a complaint with police against Prakash, his parents Ramachandra and Premamma, their daughter Padma and her husband Sudheendra.
Bagalur police have registered a case of murder and have detained Prakash and his mother.

They are also interrogating the other members of the family.
