JOIN USThe Government on Monday appointed Jamia University Vice-Chancellor Najeeb Jung as the new Delhi Lieutenant Governor while former Delhi Police Commissioner K K Paul was appointed Governor of Meghalaya.
Though both Jung and Paul's names were doing the rounds for the much-sought-after post of Lt Governor of Delhi, Government has finally opted for the Jamia University V-C.
An IAS officer of the 1973 batch from Madhya Pradesh cadre, Jung has served in various capacities for 22 years in different capacities, besides working as senior advisor for seven years at the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Jung was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia in 2009.
According to a communiqué issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, 62-year-old Jung becomes the 20th Lt Governor of the national capital, replacing two-time LG Tejinder Khanna, who had an eventful stint from April, 2007.
Khanna was reportedly not enjoying the best of relations with Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde over his handling of crimes against women, especially the public outrage post the gang-rape and fatal attack on a paramedic student in South Delhi last December.
Khanna, who was Lt Governor from 1996 to 1998 and 2007 to 2013, had an eventful tenure, during which Commonwealth Games were held in the national capital.
Meanwhile, Paul takes over as Meghalaya Governor from R S Moosahary. A 1970-batch IPS officer, Paul has served as the Delhi Police Commissioner. He recently retired as member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). His wife Amita Paul is serving as secretary to President Pranab Mukherjee.
Other appointments
Former Southern Army Commander Lt Gen (retired) A K Singh takes over as the new Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Island from Lt General Bhopinder Singh (retired), who completed his five-year tenure in March this year.
Former Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president and former Rajya Sabha member Virendra Kataria has been appointed the new Lt Governor of Puducherry, succeeding Iqbal Singh.
