Centre fears Maoist attacks on 'soft targets'

Govt has issued circulars to affected areas

Following the killing of a Superintendent of Police (SP) along with four others in Jharkhand, the Centre has expressed apprehension over more such attacks on “soft targets” and has advised the nine Red-affected states on Wednesday to remain vigilant and intensify anti-Maoist operations.

After the attack in the President-ruled state of Jharkhand that has former CRPF DG K Vijay Kumar as a security adviser, newly appointed Home Secretary Anil Goswami convened a high-level meeting to assess security in the Maoist-hit states. This was along with Vijay Kumar, Director of Intelligence Bureau Asif Ibrahim and Director General of CRPF Pranay Sahay had also attended the meeting held at the North Block.

After the meeting, the government issued a circular to the Maoist-affected states apprehending that the ultras may launch more such attacks on the police to boost the morale of their cadres who are taking a hit as counter offensive by the security forces continues to dominate the core area held by Maoists.

Additional advice

The Centre also asked the states to intensify operations against ultras, especially along inter-state borders.

The government is of the view that the CRPF, through their joint operations with state special police, was able to contain the Red terror. The Maoists get emboldened whenever this security grid gets relaxed, it said.

The security forces are of the view that Maoists carried out this attack to divert the attention of personnel engaged in a long-drawn battle with ultras in Latehar, Palamu and Garwah since the last week of June.

Leader in hiding

Top Maoist leader Arunji is believed to have been hiding in these jungles and security forces are trying to pull the ultras out of their comfort zones.

The Jharkhand police has also been warned that Maoists may carry out a spectacular attack to outwit the security forces. The security forces have been advised to avoid losses in moderately dominated areas and put pressure in core areas thorough continuous offensive.
