A man arrested for raping a minor girl after kidnapping her from south-east Delhi’s Lajpat Nagar escaped from police custody on Thursday.

Raja, a resident of Jahangirpuri K-Block, has been booked under section 363 (kidnapping) and 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code. He also faces charges under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

Police said his case was taken for trial in Saket court on June 26.

“Raja was sent to three days’ police custody on Wednesday for verification of his native address,” a police officer said.

He was scheduled to be taken to UP’s Saharanpur district by sub-inspector Rajveer and constables Shankar Lal and Kuldeep.

“The accused was taken out of Lajpat Nagar police station’s lock-up at 8 pm. He was supposed to be taken to Saharanpur in a taxi,” the officer added.

The three police officers then took Raja near 3C’s mall in Lajpat Nagar Phase-3. “We kept waiting there for a while as the taxi did not turn up,” said sub-inspector Rajveer.

It is alleged that while waiting, Raja pushed constables Shankar and Kuldeep, and managed to break free from their grip. He ran towards a residential colony with the policemen chasing him.

“Raja was pursued for some distance, but the officers failed to overpower him. He managed to escape.”

A fresh case under section 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to lawful apprehension) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against Raja.

He was yet to be found even till Friday evening. Police are conducting raids at his possible hideouts and hope to arrest him soon.
