Police claim six Maoists gunned down in Gadchiroli

The anti-Maoist operations police unit on Sunday claimed that it has managed to gun down at least six persons suspected to be part of the Communist Party of India-Maoist in the forests of Gadchiroli district in the eastern extremity of the state, bordering Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

Local media reporting from Gadhchiroli said that while police early in the day had claimed that six bodies have been recovered, later they changed their version and claimed that only one body had been found and the search was on for other bodies.

According to the police control room,  a normal combing operation was being carried out in the Etapalli tehsil of Gadchiroli district since midnight on Saturday. Early on Sunday the operations team came across a group of suspected believed to be from from the People's Liberation Guerilla Army (PLGA), and a gun-battle between the two parties took place.

According to local media, after a reportedly heavy exchange of fire from both sides, PLGA cadres fled from the site, leaving one bullet-ridden corpse, a carbine, some country-made firearms and some party literature. Massive blood stains found on the spot have led security forces to surmise that there is a strong possibility of more casualties.

“None of the security personnel engaged in the gun battle sustained any injury. A massive search is being conducted to locate wounded PLGA cadres who may be trying to seek shelter in some nearby hamlets. Security forces engaged in combing operations suspect that at least six PLGA cadres were killed,” police said.
