Activists of Bangalore HIV and Aids Forum have demanded that the Union government pass the much delayed HIV/Aids Bill in the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament.

Activists said that constant delays in passing the Bill has affected people living with HIV/Aids. “People living with HIV/Aids are facing stigma and discrimination in their day-to-day lives,” an activist said. “They are refused treatment, employment and education because.

The discrimination extends to members of their families as well. The Bill seeks to protect their rights both in the public and private sectors.”

Children are the worst sufferers since they are subjected to daily stigma and discrimination. There are about 4,000 children living with HIV/Aids in the State. The government offers Rs 620 per month if they live with their parents.

The scheme has not been implemented in Bangalore — where there are 223 children living with HIV/Aids.
