SC pulls up Centre for failing to regulate acid sale

Apex court gives a week to govt for framing policy

The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed the Centre for its failure to come up with a policy for regulating the sale of acid, which has been used in attacks on women

.

A bench headed by Justice R M Lodha noted the “tragic and unfortunate” death of a Delhi girl in Mumbai in one such attack recently, while regretting that the government did not act even after repeat of such incidents.

The court gave the Centre a week’s time for framing a policy, while warning that it would pass the order in case of a failure.

“People are dying but you are not worried. Think of people who are losing their lives everyday. Think of the girl who died recently after she was attacked with acid. We are sorry to see but you don't look concerned at all. Seriousness is not seen on the part of government in handling the issue,” the bench observed.

The court reminded the Centre of its assurance given in April for making consultations with all the states, while noting that nothing seems to have happened.

“There is not even a suggestion that a meeting of Union home secretary with chief secretaries or other representatives from all the states ever took place. No compliance report has been filed in this court in the last two months. It seems the Centre is not interested in this issue,” the bench said.

Hearing a PIL filed by a Delhi-based victim Laxmi, the court had earlier asked the Centre to explore ways in this regard. It had adjourned the matter on an assurance from the solicitor general.
