Shinde unclear about Ishrat's terror link

Last Updated 10 July 2013, 20:02 IST

Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde is apparently unable to make up his mind whether Mumbai girl Ishrat Jahan had a terror link despite the fact that one of the leaders of his own party wanted him to clarify on the issue and 11 years have lapsed since Ishrat was killed in an alleged fake encounter by the Gujarat police.

The issue has courted controversy since the CBI, in its charge sheet, refused to scan her terror link though union home ministry said she was in linked to Pakistan-based militant outfit Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT). Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh had recently met the minister in order to seek his clarification on whether Ishrat any terror connection.

“I am trying to get the information,” is what Shinde told reporters at his monthly press conference on Wednesday when asked about his views on the suspected militant links of the girl who was killed along with others in 2004.

The Home Minister, who was keeping away from the contentious issue that has acquired political tones, agreed that a difference of opinion exists between the Intelligence Bureau, which had tipped off about the movement of the suspected terror module to Gujarat police, and the CBI probing the encounter. “I know there has been difference of opinion but we will get all the information,”  the minister said.
