Delayed results leave students in the lurch

Last Updated 10 July 2013, 16:20 IST

Bangalore University’s final-year degree students are an anxious lot. With their results delayed, many of them are confused and unsure of their course of action.

While internal disputes have led to this situation, they are facing a harrowing time during interviews, be it for jobs or higher studies.

Shwetha Parshi, who is awaiting her final-year BBM results, has already booked a seat at RNSIT for an MBA programme. However, the admission will be finalised only after the results come out. “The college has been asking me for documents. If the seats get filled up, I will lose the chance. The whole situation scares me,” she explains. “Since the college is starting in the second week of August, the authorities have requested for the documents by the end of July. I really hope I will be able to get them by then,” she says.

Nisha Prakash, who has been selected for an MBA in marketing and international business, faces a similar situation.

“The admissions are not officially finalised. It’s quite irritating that the final-year results, which are supposed to come out early, have not. My seat is on hold right now. Even with a good track record, it is hard to convince colleges especially since they have a strict rule of getting all the results before finalising the admission,” she rues.

It’s as bad a nightmare for those looking for jobs. “I have lost out on many job opportunities because of not being able to submit my final-year results. I checked with my college recently but even they aren’t sure when the results will be out. We don’t have much of a choice but to wait,” says Bhargavi M Shankar.

While most companies want marks cards for verification, the worry for students looking for a job is that although their post is on hold, it may get filled up. “The companies keep updating the profiles. They have been asking for marks cards for verification. We are now just waiting,” says Soumya T.

Sneha A, a fashion design student, explains the problems that students like her are facing because of delayed results.

“We are not able to go ahead with anything until the results are out. Whether it is applying for MBA or taking up a job, we are not able to do much,” she says. “We were told that there were some issues within the University, which is the reason for the delay. We’ll just
have to see what happens,” she says.

Varalakshmi TB, who is also in the same situation, says that the future is on hold right now. “Wherever we go, we are asked for our marks. As a result, whether for jobs or college applications, we are not able to proceed in any direction,” she explains.

However, Bangalore University’s registrar (evaluation) RK Somashekar assures that all the results will be out by July 14. “We will be announcing the results by Saturday. The problem was that many of the evaluators did not turn up for correction. The issue was with unaided colleges from where the evaluators did not come,” he explains.

He goes on to say, “For English evaluation work done a few days ago, there were hardly 80 evaluators on a particular day. We have now warned the principals of unaided colleges about the consequences of not sending evaluators,” he explains.
