Last Updated 10 July 2013, 20:26 IST

The JD(S) on Wednesday began preparations for the Lok Sabha elections, likely to be held early next year.

Party chief H D Deve Gowda and State president H D Kumaraswamy held a meeting with party leaders and workers from Bangalore Rural and Bangalore Central parliamentary constituencies. Organising the party, its performance in the recent Assembly elections and other issues were discussed in the meeting.

Two constituencies will be covered every day in the meeting, which will go on till July 22. The leaders have started eliciting views of workers on candidate selection for the polls, party sources said.

‘Set right anomalies’

Later, speaking to reporters, Kumaraswamy said the government had to ensure that the Re one/kg rice scheme benefits the poor. “There are a number of anomalies in the public distribution system. Unless they are set right, the needy will not benefit,” he said.

Moreover, the government has imposed strict rules to obtain ration cards. One has to have an introducer to apply for a card. It is an unscientific system. A large number of poor families will be deprived of the benefits of the scheme if the system is not changed, Kumaraswamy said.
He criticised the government over its move to conduct caste census.
