DU colleges over-admit in general category

Last Updated 10 July 2013, 20:53 IST

Several evening colleges of Delhi University (DU) have over-admitted general-category students by two to five times more than the sanctioned strength.

According to DU rule, the same number of reserved-category students must also be admitted. But reports of reserved-category students being turned away despite meeting the cut-offs are pouring in.

Dhaniram Ambedkar, member of the central enabling committee for SC/ST categories, said that in Dyal Singh (evening) College’s Political Science (Honours) course, a total of 320 general-category students have been admitted against the sanctioned 71.

“But till the fourth list only 22 seats against the sanctioned strength of 62 in SC category, 11 against 34 in ST, and 40 against 61 in OBC category were filled. If the actual general-category strength (320) is allotted to reserved category, the number of reserved seats will go up  steeply,” said Ambedkar.

For the same college’s English (Honours) course, 244 general-category students were admitted against 58 seats, while in SC category only 18, ST four and OBC 32. The revised strength to match the general category intake will be more than threefold.

Similarly, for Economics (Honours), the actual general-category intake is 89 against the sanctioned 50. “For 15 and eight seats for SC and ST respectively, one each has been admitted, and five admitted against 27 sanctioned seats in OBC. For BCom (Honours), 166 general-category admissions have taken place against 117 seats, with four admissions against 35 in SC, none for 18 seats in ST, and 23 against 63 in OBC,” he added.

The college started Economics (Honours) this year with a cut-off of 87 per cent, and maintained similar cut-offs for English. It raised the cut-off by 5 per cent in Political Science this year, taking it to 70 per cent.

For Commerce in PGDAV (evening) College, 289 were admitted against 151 general seats, while one each was admitted in SC/ST and 39 against 81 in OBC.

“In English (Honours), 81 have been admitted in the general category against 27, 17 for SC, three for ST and 33 for OBC,” said a member, adding, the Political Science department has over-admitted 134 against 61 seats.

“Colleges are making cut-offs without application of mind. Some teachers kept cut-offs low intentionally so the new graduation system would collapse. Several colleges are citing the reason that reserved-category students do not want to study four-year graduation. These colleges have high cut-offs for reserved category, and many are trying to give excuses as they have over-admitted in general category,” said Ambedkar.

Members of the enabling committee say the Kirori Mal College Commerce department has come out with a high cut-off for reserved-category students.
