City Police Commissioner Raghavendra Auradkar has suspended a police inspector of the Vidyaranyapura police station acting on an inquiry report.

The report, submitted by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Nagaraj of JC Nagar, has indicted the accused officer, Inspector D P Prasad, of detaining and physically torturing Narayanamma, 56, the mother of a domestic maid who was accused of stealing sarees from the home of a doctor where she was employed.

The maid, Lakshmidevi, 28, was allegedly detained by Prasad four weeks ago and has since gone missing. Prasad claims that she confessed to the thefts and promised to lead police to a house where the sarees were kept. He adds that she subsequently gave them the slip when they neared the house and fled the area.

In contrast to these claims, her mother, Narayanamma, in a complaint, stated that her daughter went missing while in police custody three weeks ago, and that her family was illegally detained and tortured by Prasad, when they attempted to enquire about her whereabouts. Narayanamma also claimed that Prasad had demanded a bribe of Rs 15,000 to release them.

Nagaraj’s report has indicted Prasad on two counts — for Lakshmidevi who was detained illegally without any records and has since been missing, and for detaining and torturing Narayanamma.

Narayanamma, who was later released, was admitted to KC General Hospital, where she was treated for injuries resulting from physical abuse. On the matter of the Rs 15,000 bribe, however, the report states that there is no evidence to support the claim.

Sandeep Patil DCP (North) has instituted an inquiry against Prasad on the charge that he was using the services of head constable Rajanna for his private residence under construction in Kengeri.
