Swollen UP rivers threaten towns

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh took a turn for the worse on Saturday with swollen rivers posing threat to bigger towns prompting the authorities to issue fresh alert.

According to official sources here, the Ganga was flowing very close to the danger mark in Kanpur. “The river is merely a few cms below the danger mark. If it continues to rain the river might cross the mark in the next few days,” officials said.

The district administration has started preparations to shift around 20,000 people from as many as 30 villages which could be inundated if the river crossed the danger mark, officials added.

The Ganga was also rising at Narora, Kannauj, Farrukhabad and Raebareli. The other rivers including Ghaghra, Sharda, Rapti and Yamuna were also rising along their course, reports said.

The toll in flood related incidents in the state reached 131 with six more deaths reported in the past 24-hours.

Four people died in flood related incidents in Sant Kabir Nagar district. Companies of the provincial arms constabulary (PAC) have been pressed into service at many places to rescue people.

At least 13 districts of the state has been badly hit by the floods, officials said.
UP Chief Secretary Javed Usmani has warned officials against laxity in flood relief works.
