A fresh-faced look for Huma

In the short span of time that she has been in Bollywood, Huma Qureshi has managed to carve a niche and conduct herself with dignity in the limelight.

She’s also made bold career choices, which had got her attention — her sunglass-toting role in ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, for instance, or her chilling performance in Ek Thi Daayan.

Now, she will soon be seen on the silver screen once more in ‘Shorts’, which is Anurag Kashyap’s latest offering. The movie is touted to be a collection of short films and apparently, Huma has stuck to unassuming and nude make-up in the film, giving her a fresh-faced and realistic appeal.

She features in the short film Sujata, directed by Shlok Sharma and produced by AKFPL and Tumbhi. Sujata is the riveting tale of a young girl, who is struggling to come out of the clutches of her tormenting cousin brother. Accepting the fact that the character was a realistic one, Huma decided to steer clear of a full face of make-up. “Shlok wanted me without make-up in the film as it is a hard-hitting story and needed that look,” she explains. She candidly admits that she was initially apprehensive about this. But Huma finally consented and once the shoot was over, she was extremely anxious about how she would end up looking on screen. She needn’t have worried though — considering that director Shlok Sharma is a Anurag Kashyap protégé, Huma ended up
winning an award at Los Angeles for the film.

‘It’s the most exciting time for the industry’

Director Nikhil Advani believes that this is the most exciting time for film-makers as they are experimenting and getting creative freedom thanks to flexible audiences.

Earlier, film-makers were apprehensive about trying out new themes because audiences were inflexible, but today’s movie buffs are open to new subjects spelling a boom time for creative minds.

“I would not change from where I am for Rs 100 crore (movies). It’s the most exciting time for the industry,” says the 42-year-old, who started as an assistant director in Sudhir Mishra’s Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin in 1996.

“I have been in the industry for 20 years and in those 20 years, everyday I used to think there will be a day when people will start understanding what we want to do, and cinema will change. But we forgot that audiences have always accepted great and different films.

The last two and a half years have only proved that. The kind of films that have been made only proves that every time you give something different to the audiences, they will accept it with open arms,” he says.

Doing her bit to encourage sports

Actress Sonam Kapoor says that coming on board for a film like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which tells the inspirational life-story of former athlete Milkha Singh, was her way of serving the country as she expects the film to encourage sports. “I just felt like I was doing a service to my country. It was a service to all the sports people out there. I feel that sports has not been given the right kind of push it should get. This will encourage sportsmen and it will help people to take up sports,” Sonam says.

Sonam has done a cameo in the Farhan Akhtar-starrer, which released last week. The size of the role didn’t matter, says the actress, and adds, “I have a 15 or 20-minute role, but I feel like I’m blessed to be a part of it.”

The film is directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra.

Setting the stage on fire

Macau experienced the charm of B-town’s naach gaana when some of the prettiest stars took to the stage to perform at the IIFA awards. Madhuri Dixit shook a leg to her
best-known numbers — from Ek Do Teen to Dil To Pagal Hai and then Ghagra. The Dhak-Dhak beauty mesmerised one and all with her incredible stage presence. The romantic numbers transported everyone back to the good old days of the 90s.

Other than this, 80s queen Sridevi delivered a scintillating performance as she performed to some of her favourite numbers. Dressed in a glittering lehenga choli, the 49-year-old star proved that she could reverse the biological clock. And then there was leggy beauty Deepika Padukone, who packed a solid punch with her dhamakedar act. The ‘Cocktail’ babe showcased some of her signature moves from recent hit numbers, including Angrezi Beat, Tumhi Ho Bandhu (both from ‘Cocktail’) and Balam Pichkari (from Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani).
