Ruckus over Gowda's portrait

Last Updated 17 July 2013, 21:45 IST

The JD(S) on Wednesday objected to removal of former prime minister H D Deve Gowda’s portrait which was adorning the wall of the chief minister’s chambers in the Vidhana Soudha.

Speaking in the Legislative Assembly, N Chaluvarayaswamy (JD-S) said Gowda’s photograph was put in the chief minister’s chambers in 1996 soon after he (Gowda) became the prime minister and successive chief ministers had retained it.

“Deve Gowda did the State proud by becoming the prime minister. We never expected you to remove his photograph. This kind of politics is not good,” he told Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

Former chief ministers B S Yeddyurappa (KJP) and Jagadish Shettar (BJP) supported Chaluvarayaswamy and demanded that the photograph be reinstalled.

Initially, Siddaramaiah didn’t respond. However, when prompted by BJP members, he said: “It was not done with any vested interest. Some six photographs had to be removed and it was done. Either the photographs of all the prime ministers should be installed or none should be there.”
