For monsoon haircare

Last Updated 19 July 2013, 16:05 IST

Hair problems always double up during monsoon, thanks to the polluted rainwater, acid rain, and also the humidity. Humidity during monsoon not just makes your hair lifeless, dull and easily breakable it also makes your scalp itchy due to the constant sweating.

Rainwater is full of atmospheric pollutants these days and when this soaks your hair, it actually weakens the root of your hair, leading to hair loss. Another issue during monsoon is bacterial and fungal infections. If you are suffering from painful boils filled with pus or have extremely itchy scalp and see flaky patches, then it is sure to lead to hair loss. And thanks to the cloudy skies, you hardly get exposed to sunlight. This can lead to vitamin D deficiency in the body leading to hair loss, that too in clumps.

Remedies
* The first and most important step is to keep your hair dry. Try and avoid getting soaked in the rain frequently. Yes, there are times when you cannot escape rain, so make sure you carry a hand towel in your bag and dry your hair as soon as possible.
*  Avoid using cosmetic products altogether. Resort to natural, ayurvedic, and organic hair products only. Avoid perming or colouring your hair. Also, do not use the hot iron/hair straightener often as this can lead to dry hair, again leading to hair loss.
*  Damp hair needs to be handled cautiously as it tends to stretch and break easily. Always dry your hair gently with a towel. Use a blow dryer only on damp or wet hair, never on dry hair.
*  However, let’s warn you that too much usage of the hair dryer can also lead to lifeless hair, so you’re better of drying it naturally. Try this: Wash your hair the minute you get home from office/college so that there is sufficient time for it to dry.
*  Try and keep your hair tied-up during monsoon, and especially, if you are a frequent traveller. This will help prevent building up of dirt and grime, which can lead to split ends.
*  Make sure you carry umbrellas or rain coats all the time as the toxins that come in contact with your hair through the rain can also cause dandruff.
*  If you use a two-wheeler, always keep your head covered with a scarf or a cap as excessive sweating under the helmet can lead to itching, irritation, and ultimately to hair loss.

[Tip: Try this – mix two tablespoons of henna power with curd and apply it on your hair. Leave it for two hours and wash it off. Henna is an excellent conditioner and also strengthens the hair roots.]
