MCI hand in glove with pvt medical colleges, says DMA

Blames medical council for delay in conducting entrance exam

The Medical Council of India deliberately delayed holding the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) to give ample opportunity to the lobby of private medical colleges to file up as many as 117 cases against NEET, the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) alleged on Saturday.

Expressing “dismay” at the Supreme Court decision which quashed NEET, the DMA said it would pressurise the government to bring about amendments in the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956, in order to open the gates for NEET.

It would also stage a sit-in outside MCI office on August 8 to coerce the council to file a review petition against this decision as “it can no more trust assurance of government for going in for legal review”.

The MCI is hand in gloves with the private medical colleges as it “deliberately kept on delaying conduction of examination by frequently changing the agency which would conduct the examination,” said Dr K K Kohli, honorary state secretary of DMA.

This gave ample opportunity and encouragement to the lobby of private medical colleges to file numerous cases against this issue in various courts of country, making it more complicated to execute, he added.

Process scuttled

It also alleged that by replacing MCI chairman Dr S K Sarin, the government halted the initiation of NEET by Sarin. “It (initiation of NEET) was immediately stopped by the government by appointing new board of governors, may be with instructions that the NEET should not see the light of the day,” their statement said.

‘Mere eyewash’

Kohli also said that the government was shedding crocodile tears by filing the review petition in the court. If needed, the DMA will also approach the Opposition parties to put pressure on the government in this regard, he added.

In the meantime, the association will file a public interest litigation (PIL) and will wait for democratic elections in MCI, that are to be held in the next few months, so that “it will no more be easy to manipulate the council's memberships”, Kohli said.
