Rain leaves AP, UP in a mess

 Nearly two-dozen districts in UP have been affected by floods, as the situation was compounded by rain and release of surplus water by the neighbouring Uttarakhand and Nepal, officials said here on Monday.

Reports stated that all major rivers are flowing above the danger levels, threatening several towns along their course.

Flood-related deaths have touched 160, with many dying in lightening strikes and house collapses. About 500 cattle have also perished in the floods.

Overall, about five lakh people have been displaced in the state.

The situation reached alarming levels in Baharaich, Gonda, Lakhimpur-Kheri, Balrampur, Barabanki and Shravasti, Bijnore, Muzaffarnagar, Sitapur, Pilibhit, Budaon and Faizabad and some other districts, according to reports.


Companies of the provincial arms constabulary (PAC) have been pressed into service at many places to rescue the marooned people. The Met department has predicted more rains in the next 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in Andhra Pradesh, state revenue minister N Raghuveera Reddy has said that the rains have claimed at least 12 people in the last few days.

The minister, who attended a review meeting with Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy, told reporters that Rs 1.5 lakh each will be given to the kin of the deceased and another Rs 50,000 under Apadbhandu Scheme.

In all, 264 drinking water sources, such as tanks were totally damaged and about 8,360 people are still staying in the 53 relief centres set up by the revenue department.

Water levels receded to 16.9 feet at Dowleswaram, as 17, 96,000 cusecs of water was released into sea from the barrage. The Third warning issued in Bhadrachalam has been withdrawn following receding of water levels to 51.5 feet. However, flood water from the upper catchment areas of Godavari raised the levels of Narayanpur and Jurala projects. A large volume of water was released from Jurala with the lifting of 18 gates.

Heavy rain on Monday in Khammam district, particularly in the open cast area of Singareni coal mines in Manuguru, Illendu, Tekulapalli and Kothagudem affected coal production.
