Nightmare ride on Hunsur - Gonikoppa road

Last Updated 23 July 2013, 16:53 IST

Travelling on an inter-state highway stretch from Hunsur to Gonikoppa bring in jitters among motorists, as the heavy-potholed road is prone to mishaps.

Motorists who travel on this road, usually have their tyres punctured, or their vehicle's gears or levers breakdown and many are seen asking for a lift and help from other motorists on this road.

With heavy rains lashing the district, the road conditions have worsened. The surface of the road has been chipped off, causing inconvenience to the road users. Big potholes, mud and gravel is only found on the road. Most of the time, vehicles which get struck in potholes and struggle to come out. It is impossible to avoid potholes on the stretch.

The road users have been complaining that the people's representatives have turned blind towards the problem. A person sarcastically points out, that the road in between the forest is in such a pathetic condition, that even elephants fear that they will fall into a pothole while crossing it.

The potholes stretches upto 25 kilometre. This road connects to Kannur and
Thalassery of Kerala to Mysore. More than hundreds of buses, lorries and private vehicles use the road daily.

Those travellers from Bangalore and Mysore use this road to reach Kodagu district.

"One needs around 1.30 hours to travel on the 35-kilometre stretch," complained a motorist.

Most of the people from Kerala, travel to Mysore in a night bus. However, many buses have stopped its services, as they fear that plying on the pathetic road would damage their vehicles.

People who do not have any other option than travel on the road, curse elected representatives.

Backache and body ache is a common complaint from people who ply on this road.

The foundation for repairing the stretch was laid in January and the then Hunsur MLA Manjunath and Virajpet MLA K G Boppaiah had promised that the work will be completed in a span of three months.

Sadly, more than six months have elapsed, the work has not yet started. Even temporary patchwork has not been taken up on the road for the last five months.
