Chavan, who flew in here on Friday evening from Delhi after finalising the names of the party’s Cabinet members with the high command, drove to the Raj Bhavan to meet the governor and staked claim to form the government.
Chavan and NCP legislature party leader Chhagan Bhujbal claimed the support of 170 members in the Assembly of 288 legislators, which include 83 members of the Congress, 62 of the NCP, 26 independents and many rebels. Till date, the NCP had withheld its letter of support to the Congress, and was keen on keeping all the portfolios it had since ten years in the state.

Chavan later said while the Congress would have 23 ministers, including the chief minister in the Cabinet, the NCP would get 20 berths.
There is no change in the portfolios held by the respective parties save one or two, such as health and forests. The Congress has got health ministry and swapped labour ministry.
The crucial portfolios like home, finance, power, rural development, public works remain with the NCP. The Congress will have urban development, housing, revenue, general administration, cooperation and other ministries.
