Last Updated 23 July 2013, 22:02 IST

Six minors have been rescued from a bangle-making factory and roadside eatery in the outer Delhi’s Mangolpuri on Tuesday. The rescued children, all boys are in the age bracket 12 to 16 years, belong to Uttar Pradesh and Jharkhand.

A raid was planned by local police officials, labour inspectors of north-west district and members of an non-profit organisation (NGO) at around 11.30 am.

“We made two teams to rescue the children from two places. Both the teams moved to their fix points and successfully rescued six child labourers — four from bangle-making factory and two children from sweetmeat shops,” said Javed Ali, member, Childline Prayas, an NGO working for child labourers’ welfare.

“The children were found making bangles and working at sweetmeat shops. They used to live in the same premises where they worked which consisted of one small room with no sunlight and ventilation,” he added.

According to the NGO, most of them have never gone to school and were working for over 12 hours daily. “They used to work from eight am till late night in small, gloomy, and
suffocating room in the heat with little or no medical care. The skin rashes and wounds on their body especially hands, tell the pathetic conditions in which they were forced to live and
work,” Ali said.

“On an average, children were getting wages of Rs 30 to Rs 50 per week,” he added.
