There is a need to start people’s movement to conserve western ghats, said Karnataka Raitha Sangha state president R Manasayya.

Speaking at a state-level seminar on Western Ghats and Gadgil report, organised by the Save Western Ghats Committee in Chikmagalur on Wednesday, he said Madhav Gadgil is a environment scientist. However, the Central government has neglected the report on conserving Western Ghats submitted by him. The BJP, Congress, JD(S) and the CPM has opposed the report.
He said that the elected representatives project environmentalists as opponents of development. All the programmes of the government have turned dangerous to poor. The government which should have taken up measures to conserve Western Ghats are in favour of the rich.

Manasayya has said that Gadgil had submitted recommendations to conserve Western Ghats. He had directed the government to constitute Western Ghats Authority to conserve Western Ghats. Even the Kerala state government has also opposed the report submitted by Gadgil.  He said that the Central government do not have will power to conserve environment. National highways are laid to loot natural resources. There is a need for people’s movement to conserve Western Ghats for future generation.
Envrionmentalist S Girija Shankar said that any damage to Western Ghats will have its impact on environment.

Environmentalist from Koppala Vittappagoratli inaugurated the seminar.
