TDP claims majority in AP panchayat election

Last Updated 24 July 2013, 21:41 IST

Andhra Pradesh panchayat polls came as a shocker for YSRC and TRS, even as the main opposition Telugu Desam claimed victory in most of the village-level local bodies.

The first phase of elections were particularly bad for the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) which failed to make a big impact in Telangana, whereas the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) found no support in its own backyard where it expected to take advantage of its spearheading roll in the statehood campaign.

YSRC was on top in Kadapa, Visakhapatnam and Potti Sriramulu Nellore districts, while it fought hard in other districts in the region. In Telangana, the main battle was between the Congress, TDP and TRS.

The results indicate that the YSRC has no state-wide support barring a few pockets of Seemandhra region.

The TRS lost the key district of Mahabubnagar, represented in the Parliament by its leader KCR. The party came fourth behind the Congress, TDP and YSRC.

The party finished third in Ranga Reddy, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Adilabad districts behind Congress and TDP, while prevailing in Medak, Warangal and Nalgonda. Main opposition Telugu Desam Party has claimed that candidates with its backing have won majority of village level local bodies that went to polls on Tuesday’s first phase.
