Belur accident: 'Lake needs to be fenced'

Last Updated 25 July 2013, 18:23 IST

Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy informed the Legislative Assembly that Vishnusamudra Kere in Belur — in which a KSRTC bus plunged recently killing eight people — required fencing.

“Also, the road adjoining the lake needs to be widened. Such measures could have prevented the accident,” he added.

The minister said that there was no problem with the condition of the bus. The bus dove into the lake to avoid hitting another vehicle. The bus was also not overloaded as there were just 62 passengers.

H D Revanna (JD-S) and Rudre Gowda (Cong) called on the government to sanction Rs five lakh as compensation to families of the victims. The government has currently sanctioned Rs three lakh per family.

According to Reddy, the KSRTC had earlier set aside a sum of Rs 2.5 lakh per victim  which it has now raised to Rs 3 lakh. Reddy promised to consider the demand.
