JOIN USVincent Paul edged out Shanmugam in a well-contested seniors’ lightweight final as a controversy-marred Karnataka State Boxing Championship came to a conclusion here at the Sree Kanteerava on Sunday.
A day after Belgaum pugilist Sanjay Gawade collapsed and a couple of Iranian pugilists came under the scanner for participating in a State championship, the final day turned out to be a much peaceful affair.
Vincent and Shanmugam were cautious from the start, choosing to wait and strike rather than go in for the kill. After dodging each other for a minute, Shamugam fired the first salvo, breaching Vincent’s defences and landing a few quick blows.
Shanmugam then made sure he seized the opening round with a couple of fine blows towards the end.
Vincent appeared in trouble at the start of the second too, but, the Sport Authority of India boxer quickly regrouped, putting Shamugam off with a series of punches.
He then maintained the tempo in a well-fought final round to walk away with the gold.
Gawade fine
Meanwhile, Belgaum coach M Patel said his pugilist Gawade was doing fine and will be discharged from Command Hospital on Monday.
“Gawade has recovered from the blow he took yesterday. In fact, he watched a few bouts today. But, with Sunday being a holiday, the doctor who treated him was not there. There are no issues with him and he shall be discharged tomorrow,” Patel said.
