Girl set ablaze after gang rape

Last Updated 28 July 2013, 20:25 IST

A 13-year-old girl was set on fire by two miscreants after they gang-raped her in a village in Odisha’s coastal Kendrapara district on Sunday afternoon.

She was admitted to the local health centre after villagers rescued her from a remote house in the outskirts of the village.

She was later shifted to the government-run Sriram Chandra Bhanja(SCB) medical college hospital in Cuttack city after her condition deteriorated.

The two youths involved in the crime are absconding. Police have launched a search operation to nab them.

‘Love affair’

According to preliminary reports, one of the two accused in the case was involved in a “one-sided love affair” with the victim’s elder sister. Following her marriage a few days ago, the youth was allegedly after the victim to get involved with him, which she had refused.

They had an argument over the matter on Sunday, following which the youth, with the help of one of his friends, forcibly took the girl to an isolated house in the village. The two then allegedly raped her and set her on fire.

The police have registered a case on the basis of a complaint filed by the victim’s mother. A detailed report on the ghastly incident is awaited.
