Krishna water level recedes

Water levels in River Krishna and its tributaries have begun to recede owing to a decrease in the discharges from the dams in the neighbouring Maharashtra.

If a similar situation continues for a couple of days, the 39 flood-prone villages in Chikodi, Raibag and Athani taluks will return to normalcy, authorities said.

Inflow into Krishna and its tributaries Doodhganga and Vedganga came down to 2.10 lakh cusecs, while the discharge from Almatti dam was 2.37 lakh cusecs. Water levels in the river basins in villages in Chikodi receded by about one feet in the last 24 hours.

With Krishna, Doodhganga and Vedganga flowing above normal levels, some 20 bridges and barrages had remained under water for over a week.

The situation in the flood-prone villages remained normal on Monday. Only those residing in agricultural lands have been affected.

Meahwhile, life in Chikodi, Raibag and Athani taluks was limping back to normal with water levels in Krishna, Doodhganga and Vedganga beginning to recede since Sunday. Inflow of water into the State from Maharashtra has receded and so is the discharge from Almatti dam.

In Chikodi, water levels receded by about one feet and a similar situation could be witnessed at Raibag and Athani from Tuesday onwards. Residents expressed confidence that water levels in the rivers will be normal in the new few days.

Water inflow from Rajapur barrage was 1.79 lakh cusecs, and Doodhganga 31,788 cusecs. Water discharge from Koyna dam in Maharashtra too came down to 46,048 cusecs. Sources said water levels in Maharashtra have receded considerably in the last two days.

As a precautionary measure, authorities on Sunday shifted 200 people from Banajwad village in Athani taluk to a gruel centre. They have been provided with food and medicines.

On Monday, Excise and District in-charge Minister Satish Jarkiholi issued compensation cheques for Rs 1.50 lakh each to the next kin of Ningavva Ningappa Balobal and Laxmikant Ramakrishna Dhangar who died in a wall collapse at Katakbhavi village in Raibag taluk.
