Four more patrol vans flagged off to help women in distress

Last Updated 29 July 2013, 21:13 IST

In view of the increasing spurt of incidents of crime against women in the capital, the Delhi Commission of Women launched four new 24X7 mobile helpline vans on Monday, which will be available to distressed women, particularly during midnight and odd hours.

The number of mobile vans with DCW has gone up to five.

These women patrol vans were flagged off by chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Each van has been earmarked to two districts in the capital. They can be called by dialling a 24-hour toll-free helpline number 1800-11-9292.

The number will be integrated with the city government’s 24X7 helpline 181 for women in distress.

“The DCW is today initiating a tremendously significant step by launching these vans,
but cautioned the commission that the NGOs to whom these 24x7 helpline vans are being given to operate should become more alert and dedicated in their approach to help
distressed women whenever they call, especially during midnight and odd hours,” Dikshit said.

Provide support

She called upon DCW volunteers to ensure that women suffering from marital discord, domestic violence, sexual harassment at workplace, eve-teasing or rape should be spontaneously dealt with, sympathetically and carried to hospitals, shelter homes or Nari Niketan as and when their services are required.

Dikshit said her government will not hesitate in providing funds for more such vans if required.

These five mobile vans will deal with 11 revenue districts in the capital.
DCW chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh, women and child development minister Kiran Walia and DCW member secretary Geeta Sagar were present.
