Docs, nurses roughed up as woman dies during delivery

Mob attacks labour room, staff suspend work in protest

A mob of around 100 people allegedly manhandled doctors and nurses of a hospital in Khichripur in east Delhi following death of a woman and her newborn.

After the attack on Sunday, agitated resident doctors and nurses at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital suspended work demanding proper security arrangements for the staff.

Narrating the incident, medical superintendent, Dr Adarsh Kumar, on Monday said around 4 am on Sunday, a pregnant woman referred by some nearby maternity home was admitted to the hospital.

On examination, the doctors found that the baby had already died in the uterus.
Superintendent said “Our doctors explained the situation to the pregnant woman’s relatives and induced the labour. Around 2 pm, she delivered the dead child. After delivery, some complications arose as the patient was bleeding profusely and had got septicaemia. We tried to revive the women but she died,” Kumar explained.

He said after 20 minutes of her death, a mob came and attacked the labour room of the hospital. The mob also manhandled the doctors and nurses, Kumar said.

“The agitated staff then suspended their work demanding proper security system. Most of the staff has returned to duty,” Dr Kumar said.

New police post

“Additional commissioner of police, Dinesh Gupta, and station house office of Kalyanpuri police station, Arvind Kumar, came to the hospital to discuss the issue and on the need to set up a police post in the main casualty area of the hospital. They have assured us that the police post would be set up soon,” said Kumar.

of police, Dinesh Gupta, said a case against unknown persons has been registered with Kalyanpuri police station though no arrest has been made.
