Is Saif an unlucky charm?

Saif Ali Khan has worked with two newcomers in recent years, Giselli Monteiro in Love Aaj Kal and Diana Penty in ‘Cocktail’ and strangely, they both still have to sign their second movie.

What makes this case curiouser is that both films were hits and both the newbies were appreciated in their debut roles. Giselli was part of Always Kabhie Kabhie before she vanished into oblivion but Diana is yet to bag her second film.

All the top actors in Bollywood work with newcomers. And the upside of working with a top actor is instant stardom. Shah Rukh Khan worked with newcomer Anushka Sharma and she hasn’t looked back since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. However, Saif’s actresses seem to be out of luck, despite giving hits with him. This co-incidence has naturally set tongues wagging in the industry, which rides high on superstitions.

However, trade analyst Taran Adarsh feels that it’s unfair to label Saif as a jinx when it comes to newcomers. “Saif has nothing to do with the girl’s career once their film together is over. If anything — look at it this way — he’s actually proven lucky for them as their debuts have been hits,” he says, adding that each actor here comes with their own career graphs and is responsible for their choices. “The girls may have passed on films that could have been hits — who is to say what went wrong then?” he adds

An old friendship rekindled

Directed by young award-winning ad film-maker Tanushri Chatterji Bassu, the vibrant youth flick Purani Jeans revolves around a young man who journeys back to his hometown after 12 years to find a bond of friendship waiting to be rediscovered and cherished — just like a pair of worn-out jeans that seem to get better every time they are taken out of the closet.
Starring Tanuj Virwani, Adiya Seal and Isabelle Liete, Purani Jeans is produced by Eros International, with music by Ram Sampat.
Currently under production, the film has been shot in the picturesque locations of Manali, Simla, and Chandigarh with a schedule abroad as well.

Impressing her co-stars

Katrina Kaif definitely has a way with her co-stars — her unaffected attitude and professional
commitment have made her a favourite on the sets of a film.Previously, actors like Salman Khan and Ranbir Kapoor, with whom she has shared screen space in multiple films, have come out in praises for her.

And now, the latest to sing her praises is Aamir Khan, who has been shooting for Dhoom 3 with the model-turned-actress. The two have quite a few scenes together and have
been shooting some daring stunt sequences and apparently, Aamir has been favourably impressed with Katrina’s dedication. In fact, he’s so charmed by his co-star that
he was thrilled when she attended the special screening of his wife, Kiran Rao’s film ‘Ship of Theseus’.

Katrina took time out for the event on her birthday, despite the fact that she had dinner plans with alleged beau Ranbir Kapoor. Aamir says, “I’m so happy that she could come, that too on her birthday. I might throw her a party as a birthday gift soon.” No doubt Katrina is thrilled to have yet another Khan in her pocket!

A comedy of errors

Baat Bann Gayi, produced by Sayed Asif Jah and Megha Agarwal, written and directed by Shuja Ali, with story by Sayed Asif Jah, is a romantic comedy based on Shakespeare’s ‘Comedy of Errors’ — to be precise, it depicts the comedy of errors when lookalike characters encounter each other.

Unexpected, hilarious and utterly humorous situations arise because of mistaken identity. The protagonist of this film, Kabir (played by Ali Fazal) is a novelist deeply in love with a beautiful young girl Rachna (essayed by Anisa), who is brought up by her brother Laxmi Nivas and his wife Sulochna.

They are in search of an intelligent and handsome young man as a groom for Rachna.
The real twist in the tale comes when Kabir’s lookalike Rasiya Bihari — who works for the land mafia — happens to land at Rachna’s bungalow.

Going all out for the perfect take

Rumour has it that director Apoorva Lakhia has shot one of the most expensive and toughest scenes of his career in his upcoming film, Zanjeer.

The scene portrays Telugu star Ram Charan — who is making a debut in B-town with this film — driving through an area infested with members of the oil mafia and destroying the entire slum.

This sequence is one of the most expensive scenes in Bollywood in recent times, and required research and planning of over two months to be portrayed in a specific way.

Picturised on a huge set with about 2,000 huts and several cars for back-up, Apoorva Lakhia made sure nothing went wrong during the sequence.

With eight cameras for the sequence, the director was certain about his vision.
It took the team of the film two months to put together the set and the scene was shot over five days at Film City, Mumbai.

A source close to the team says, ‘There were about 2,000 huts and several cars for back-up. The most difficult part about this sequence was co-ordination as there were eight cameras and working on all together becomes quite challenging. But Apoorva had a very clear vision and knew what he wanted the scene to look like, which made work very easy.” The film will hit screens on September 6.
