In the midst of strange people

Alice in Wonderland’ airs on HBO at 11.48 pm on July 31. Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) is all of 19 when she gets engaged to an English nobleman. Alice finds her fiancé rather stupid and runs away from her engagement party, wondering whether she wants to go through with the marriage — that’s when she falls down a hole in the garden and lands up in Wonderland.

Only, it’s called Underland and is inhabited by strange people and talking animals.
Alice soon finds out the reason for her presence in Underland – to overthrow the horrid Jabberwocky and re-establish the queen on her throne. The film also stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Anne Hathaway and Crispin Glover.

A year-long cooking extravaganza!

Tune in to ‘Julie & Julia’ on Zee Studio at 4.05 pm on July 31. A woman on the verge of turning 30, who is frustrated in a temporary secretary job, takes on a year-long culinary quest — to cook all 524 recipes in Julia Child’s ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking’. She chronicles her trials and tribulations in a blog that catches on with the food crowd. The film stars Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, Stanley Tucci, Chris Messina and Linda Emond.

Visions of a killer

Catch ‘Hideaway’ on Sony Pix at 6.45 pm on July 31. While traveling on the road with his wife and daughter, Hatch Harrison meets with an accident. He dies for more than two hours — but the specialist Dr Jonas Nyebern successfully brings him back to life.

Hatch has some weird premonitions and becomes able to see through the eyes of the psychopath serial killer Vassago, a young man that killed his mother and his sister and committed suicide. Unfortunately, he too was brought back to life and is now killing young women and teenagers. When he foresees that Vassago is trying to capture his daughter, Hatch tries to find the criminal first, in spite of his family and the detective in charge of the investigation considering that he would need psychiatric help.

The film stars Jeff Goldblum, Christine Lahti, Alicia Silverstone, Jeremy Sisto and Alfred Molina.
