'My sense of humour has increased'

I feel lucky to do a small yet a nice role. After all, after Sonakshi Sinha I was the only actress in the film,” says Gurdeep Kohli, who played the character of a lady inspector in the film Rowdy Rathore opposite Akshay Kumar.  This, however, does not define Gurdeep Kohli, who continues to remain a popular face on the small screen.

“My identity among audience has been established as Dr Juhi Singh with Sanjivani,” says Gurdeep. She believes that the image has helped her in bagging roles that are not purely dramatic like a typical saas-bahu show. “Characters that I have played after Sanjivani are not alike. Though they were clearly female protagonist shows, they had nothing to do with the saas-bahu concept,” says she.

Her unwillingness to do stereotypical roles on the small screen made her opt for melodramatic serials like Sinndoor Tere Naam Ka, Bhabhi and Kasamh Se. But she changed the course of her career by choosing a comedy serial Best of Luck Nikki and did some cooking for kids on Khana Khazana.

Of all these shows, comedy has been the best experience for her so far. “I have done drama in daily soaps, played the female protagonist role but the ultimate challenge was to do comedy,” says Gurdeep, who after doing two seasons of Best of Luck Nikki on Disney Channel is back with its third season. Calling herself wittier now, the actress says, “It is the third season of the show and I feel my sense of humour has also increased.  This time the content is very different as Himani (character played by Gurdeep) is expecting one more child and is going through mood swings,” says Gurdeep cheerfully.

She feels privileged to be able to experiment. “Generally TV serial actresses don’t get a chance to do anything besides drama. I decided to let go off drama in order to get more knowledge about acting by doing different projects each time,” she says.

But when asked about why she isn’t seen on big screen after Rowdy Rathore, the actress clarifies, “There are offers but I am looking out for something that interests me. I don’t want to rush in taking up roles because there is always a fear of getting typecast.” But at the same time Gurdeep mentions that she won’t hesitate in doing a small role in a Salman Khan starrer film too.

“I will definitely go for films with big stars. This is how we get noticed. If there is a need for an actress like me in any Salman Khan starrer film, then definitely I will do that role even if it is not that substantial,” exclaims Gurdeep and signs off.
