Auto driver commits suicide

Last Updated 31 August 2013, 22:04 IST

An auto driver allegedly ended his life at his house in Shivanahalli on Friday night.

The dead, R Siddaraju, 35, had married Shobha eight years ago and the couple had two sons, aged ten and eight. Siddaraju was a chronic alcoholic and had attempted suicide three times in the past couple of years, the police said, adding that he used to come home drunk and harass Shobha.

Shobha had filed a complaint of domestic violence against him at Basaveshwaranagar police station a couple of days ago. On Friday night, Siddaraju had an argument with his wife and mother. In the fit of rage, he hit his mother with his slippers on the road, following which the women complained to Basaveshwaranagar police. The police summoned him to the station and warned him.

After returning home, he harassed his wife pressuring her to withdraw the complaint. In her statement to the police, she said Siddaraju tried to emotionally blackmail her, saying that he would commit suicide if she did not withdraw her complaint.

“He took a saree, went to the room and locked himself up. I did not take it seriously. By the time I went to bathroom and returned, he had hanged himself,” she said. Though he was immediately rushed to a nearby private hospital, he was declared brought dead.
