Last Updated 19 August 2013, 20:27 IST

AICC general secretary B K Hariprasad is set to win unopposed the Rajya Sabha bypoll  from the State.

He filed his nomination papers on Monday accompanied by KPCC chief G Parameshwara and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah among others. Opposition parties, the JD(S) and the BJP, have not fielded their candidates. August 19 was the last date for filing nomination papers.

Besides Hariprasad, social activist T J Abraham and another candidate Padmarajan have also filed their nominations for the bypoll.

But their nomination papers are likely to be rejected as they are not supported by requisite number of MLAs as proposers.

The byelection has been necessitated due to the resignation of Anil Lad, who got elected as a Congress MLA from Bellary in the recently-held Assembly elections.

With 122 members in the Legislative Assembly, the Congress is in a comfortable position to send its candidate to Rajya Sabha. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on Tuesday. Secretary and Returning Officer Om Prakash is likely to declare Hariprasad elected on August 22, the last day for withdrawal of nomination papers.

Assets and liabilities

As per the affidavit of assets and liabilities filed by him along with the nomination papers, Hariprasad owns total assets worth Rs 6.50 crore, which also includes those in the name of his spouse. His total liabilities are about Rs 23 lakh. He has movable assets worth Rs 35.99 lakh, while his spouse has Rs 58.63 lakh worth of movable assets.

The total worth of immovable assets that are owned by the AICC general secretary is
Rs 3 crore, while his spouse has Rs 2.56 crore worth of
immovable assets, as per the affidavit.
