Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Thursday said the Jodhpur police will do a free and fair investigation in to the charges of sexual assault on a minor by the controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu.

“I have spoken to the Jodhpur Police Commissioner on Wednesday night and told him to investigate the case at every level, and ensure action based on truth and facts,” Gehlot said.

The Delhi Police filed a case against Asaram Bapu on the complaint of a 16-year-old girl that he had sexually assaulted her in a Jodhpur ashram on August 15 in the guise of healing her illness.

The victim and her family have been lodged in Jodhpur with police protection after they were brought here by the Delhi Police.   “Jodhpur Police have already inspected the place where the crime was allegedly committed,” Gehlot said.“We should not pre-judge until the investigation is over, it is not fair to comment. Jodhpur Police Commissioner and Superintendent of Police are tackling the case. Let the probe be completed,” he added.

Gehlot said these kind of allegations on sadhus and sants are not good for the society. “Sadhus and sants should maintain their character and work in their limit as any bad message would hurt and harm the society. People in society pay their regards to these people, such cases are not a good sign,” the chief minister said.

All eyes are now on how the police will go about arresting Asaram Bapu as preliminary inquiry has revealed that the victim was sexually assaulted.
