Woman burnt to death, husband fights for life

Her family alleges dowry harassment by in-laws

A 22-year-old pregnant woman was burnt to death and her physically challenged husband is suffering from severe burn injuries in mysterious circumstances in a house at east Delhi’s Pandav Nagar, police said.

The incident took place on Saturday night when the couple’s neighbours informed police control room that a fire has engulfed in their flat. Police and a Delhi Fire Services teams rushed to the spot and doused the flames within a few minutes.

After controlling the blaze they managed to pull out Savita and her husband Pramod, 24, from the flat. Both were suffering from burn injuries. “We rushed them to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital where Savita was declared brought dead and Pramod was suffering from severe burn injuries,” said a police officer.

While the woman’s family members alleged that she was burnt to death by her husband and other in-laws for dowry, her in-laws have refuted the allegations claiming that the woman committed suicide by setting herself on fire.

Savita was married to Pramod seven months ago. Her family members told police that she was three months pregnant and her husband, Pramod, and in-laws used to torture them for dowry.

A case in connection with the incident has been registered with Mandawali police station. Police have asked the local sub-divisional magistrate to conduct a probe into the woman’s death.

Pramod, who is undergoing treatment at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, works as a tailor in the locality. Savita’s body was handed over to her family after an autopsy at the hospital on Saturday.

On Sunday, family members and relatives of Savita gathered outside Mandawali police station and protested against the local police after keeping Savita’s body on the main road. They demanded immediate arrest of Savita’s in-laws. They alleged that police were trying to hush up the matter.

Savita’s sister Anita, who lives in east Delhi’s Kondli, alleged that Pramod’s family members had cheated her parents and sister by keeping them in dark that Pramod was physically challenged.

“Even as our family never raised that issue, Pramod and his family members tortured my sister for dowry. On Friday, Savita called me over the phone to tell me that her life was in danger. I did not take her fear seriously,” Anita told police.

She alleged that Savita’s in-laws poured petrol on her and set it on fire. Nonetheless, police are verifying the allegations and are questioning the in-laws. The condition of Pramod was also said to be serious.
