Renjith was never suspended: AFI

Last Updated 02 September 2013, 17:01 IST

The Athletics Federation of  India (AFI) wrote to the Sports Ministry late on Monday evening that triple jumper Renjith Maheswary was never suspended by them over a dope offence.

National record holder and former Asian champion Renjith was stopped from receiving this year’s Arjuna Award hours before the ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan after reports surfaced of him having failed a dope test during the 2008 Open Nationals in Kochi. Sports Minister Jitendra Singh later said Maheswary was not denied the award but the prize was put on hold till a clear picture emerged.

He asked AFI to come up with its finding by Monday.

“We have received the report  from AFI. They have said that Maheswary had never been punished or suspended for any dope violation by any committee,” Sports Secretary P K Deb told Deccan Herald.

However, it had been learnt that the sports ministry was able establish that Renjith had flunked the dope test for stimulant ephedrine.

The rule for Arjuna Award states: “Sportspersons found positive for use of drugs banned by the International Olympic Committee, in any laboratory accredited by the International Olympic Committee, will not be eligible for the Award."
