The JD(S) will launch a State-wide protest in case the State government fails to compensate farmers and areca growers who have lost their crop due to rains and diseases, warned Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Assembly H D Kumaraswamy.

Addressing a press conference at Circuit House on Tuesday, he said that the Congress government is more bothered about the publicity of completing 100 days than addressing to the pains of the farmers.

Areca growers in Dakshina Kannada have lost crop worth Rs 220 crore, in Shimoga worth Rs 204 crore, around Rs 324 crore in Chikmagalur, and Rs 57 crore in Udupi and more than Rs 5 crore in Uttar Kannada due to the rot disease. However, the State government has plans to release Rs 25 crore as compensation which is peanuts compared to the massive loss.

He mocked at Chief Minister Siddaramiah, who is planning a trip to China to attract investors than adhering to the needs of the farmers suffering in the drought and flood areas.

The Congress government claimed that farmers and labourers are the two eyes of the nation. Sadly, the Congress’ vision seems to be blurred, he ridiculed.

The government did not have time to form a committee to address the problems of the farmers, but has formed committees with regard to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, he said.

"What is the use of planning a global investors meet again? Due to the financial policies of the Central government, no investors are ready to invest," he said and criticised that the Congress is following the footsteps of the BJP. The money from taxpayers can be intelligently invested, Kumaraswamy suggested.

With regard to the proposed Niddodi power plant, Kumaraswamy said that the government should act in the interests of the people. It is better they drop it, as people are unhappy, he said.
