Cong Gujarat bandh a damp squib

The Congress in Gujarat faced a major embarrassment on Friday when a bandh it had called failed to yield the amount of success it had expected.

The Congress, which called for a shutdown following the explosive resignation letter by former DG Vanzara and set out to dent Narendra Modi’s image, failed to garner enough public support. The party that could barely win 52 seats in the Assembly elections last year, however, showed that though it is weakened, it is still a power in the state with its workers taking to streets in various parts of the state.

Apart from some incidences of stone pelting and tyre burning, the Bandh was largely peaceful. The administration, however, rounded up more than 1,200 workers, including MLAs Paresh Dhanani and Jasa Barad who were trying to enforce the bandh.

Police also detained Congress’ Rajkot unit president Jasvant Bhatti last night, when he,  along with others, was allegedly trying to torch a Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) bus. Both Congress MP Kunvarjee Bavliya and MLA Indranil Rajyaguru staged a protest against the same.
