India supports Russian proposal for Syria

Last Updated 10 September 2013, 20:44 IST

India on Tuesday extended its support to Russia’s proposal for Syria to place all its chemical weapons under international control in order to avoid a US strike against President Bashar al-Assad’s regime in the West Asian country.

Without referring explicitly to the proposal by Russia, New Delhi said it would welcome any move towards ensuring safe and secure custody of chemical weapon stockpiles till their complete elimination, as well as towards a political and non-military solution to the conflict in Syria.

“If you take these four elements (of India’s position on Syria) together — no military solution, political settlement, complete destruction of chemical weapons, and pending elimination safe and secure custody of chemical stockpiles — and if there are any proposals which are moving in this direction, obviously, as India, we would see these as positive developments,” said Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin.
India has been consistently arguing that the conflict in Syria can not be resolved through military means.
