Last Updated 13 November 2009, 20:06 IST

“Gadkari has been sounded on his new assignment and a formal announcement would be made by the month-end,” said reliable party sources. Gadkari, said he was ready to shoulder any responsibility that would come his way but refused to say on record whether “he is the choice”.

Gadkari, who spoke to Deccan Herald over phone from Nagpur, said he would be visiting Delhi after about a week.

Without offering any categorical comments, he dropped broad hints about the important task awaiting him at the party headquarters. The saffron leader, here on Thursday had a nearly two-hour-long meeting with party general secretary (organisation) Ram Lal who is also an RSS pointsman and BJP headquarters in-charge Shyam Jaju. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has already made it clear that Rajanth’s successor would be relatively young and from outside current second-rung leaders in the party’s national leadership hierarchy.
