CBI probe sought into theft at Jain basadi

Fisheries Minister Abhay Chandra Jain on Wednesday said he will urge Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to hand over the recent Jain basadi idol theft case in Moodabidri to the CBI.

Speaking to reporters, he said Director General of Police of Chhattisgarh, Ramnivas, has recently written to his Karnataka counterpart, recommending that the case should be referred to the federal investigating agency, as it has inter-state jurisdiction.

The suspect arrested in connection with the theft had confessed that he had sold the idols to a jeweller in Chhattisgarh. “The jeweller appears to be very influential. The government there has not been able to do proper investigation. The Chhattisgarh government is not cooperating in conducting a thorough investigation,” he alleged.

The Chhattisgarh police chief said that the jeweller has denied having bought any idol from anybody. It is suspected that some of the stolen idols may have been sold to merchants in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. So it is appropriate to hand over the investigation to the CBI, he added.
