India bag 29 medals; finish second overall

India finished a remarkable second in the first Asian School Track and Field Championships in Kuantan, Malaysia with an impressive medal tally of 29, including 12 gold, on Sunday.

Prominent among the gold medal winners were Anjana Dhavalu Thamake (girls 800M), who had won a yellow metal in the recent Asian Youth Games in Nanjing and promising shot putter Shakti Solanki.

India won 12 gold, 11 silver and six bronze and finished second behind hosts Malaysia (12 gold, 14 silver, 10 bronze).

The Medal Winners: Gold: Muhammed Basheer (boys, 800M and 1500M); Abdulla Aboobacker (boys triple jump); Shakti Solanki (boys shot put); Anjana Dhavalu Thamake (girls 800M); Chitra Palakeezh Unnikrishnan (girls 1500M and 3000M); Arya Thankamani Sudakaran (girls 100M hurdles); Jisha Veendakunnu Velayudhan (girls 400M hurdles); Sapna Burman (girls high jump); Meghana Devanga Bal Krishna (girls shot put, girls 4x400M relay).

Silver: Rahul Harveer Singh (boys 800M and 1500M); Bikramjit Singh (boys long jump); Shakti Solanki (boys discus throw); Ruma Sarkar (girls 100M and 200M); Sanjivani Baburao Jadhav (girls 1500M and 3000M); Rochelle Maria Macfarlane (girls triple jump); Maria Jaison (girls pole vault); Sapna Burman (girls javelin throw).

Bronze: Babitha Balakrishnan (girls 800M); Ankita Sunil Gosavi (girls 100M hurdles); Binsy Meethal Gopalan (girls 5000M race walk); Jenimol Joy (girls long jump); Puspha Jakhar Ranbeer (girls javelin throw); Sapna Burman (girls hammer throw).
