Gritty Raut clinches silver; India finish sixth

Womens 4x400M relay team pockets silver

Kavita Raut completed an excellent competition by winning the women’s 10000M silver while the women’s 4x400M relay squad too came up with a silver-winning performance on the final day.

Kavita, who won the bronze medal in 5000M on the opening day, timed 34:17.21 to finish behind China’s Bai Xue 34:11.14 in the 25-lap contest.

The women’s relay team, comprising Mandeep Kaur, Sini Jose, Chitra K Soman and Manjeet Kaur clocked 3:31.62 to take the second place. China once again claimed the gold in 3:31.08.

The men’s 4x400 team featuring Harpreet Singh, Bibin Mathew, V B Bineesh and Shake Motaja clocked 3:06.83 to claim the bronze medal behind Japan and China.

India finished the competition with one gold, four silver and seven bronze medals to be placed sixth on the medals table. China topped the tally with 18 gold, 19 silver and 10 bronze medals, underlining their status as the number one nation in the continent.
Japan were second with 12 gold, five silver and five bronze medals. In the men’s 10000M, Sunil Kumar came seventh, clocking 29:28.73 while Surendra Singh, who was pulled out of the 5000 to concentrate on the longer race, did not start.

Sahana Kumari also finished outside the medals bracket in women’s high jump, clearing 1.80 metres to take the seventh position. Also disappointing was the performance of the men’s javelin throwers, with Om Narayan and Kashinath Naik finishing fourth and sixth respectively.
